The trend for those pursuing this profession largely depends on the expansion of the automotive industry. Currently (2005), the production volume of cars in Thailand has reached over 1 million units, partly due to significant support from the government and private sector in developing a master plan for the automotive industry. Phase 1 has been in operation since 2002, and a Phase 2 master plan (2006-2010) is being prepared to cope with trade liberalization. Qualifications for Practitioners

• Completion of at least lower secondary education (Grade 9) and training in gas metal welding from the Department of Skill Development, Ministry of Labor, or holding a vocational certificate (Vocational Certificate) or higher vocational certificate (Higher Vocational Certificate) in welding or metalworking.
• Physically strong, resilient, able to work outdoors and handle heavy tasks.
